Everything I Ate in A Weekend in Bulgaria

I was studying abroad in Rome, in the spring of 2019, my friends were looking up flights for our upcoming weekend trips. We used Ryan Air Fare finder to find the cheapest destination from Rome on our dates and Sofia came up.

I had previously traveled most of Western Europe and been to the big “travel destinations”, Paris, London, Dublin, Germany, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and many more. I wanted to travel to more underrated destinations.

We booked the $32.77 flight and decided to go for it. Bulgaria looked beautiful on Pinterest and we thought it would be a great experience.

We flew from Rome Ciampino Airport to Sofia Airport early in the morning, checked into our Airbnb, and looked up places for an early lunch. We stumbled upon a restaurant only a few blocks from our Airbnb, it was called Aubergine. At Aubergine, I ordered mint and beetroot hummus to begin. Then I had a sweet potato risotto creamy with parmesan.

We ate dinner at a restaurant, I couldn’t find the name of, I had a delicious shopska salad, I had only previously had it in Macedonia it had manouri cheese, cucumber, tomato, olive oil, and vinegar. It was incredible and filling! I also had a tequila sunrise with it.

We spent the night at a bar crawl and going to clubs, so we were out pretty late and slept through breakfast.

For brunch we went to “The Little Things", I had a goat cheese bruschetta with arugula and walnuts on toasted bread to split, with my friend. I had scrambled eggs with peppers red onion, ham and cheese. The restaurant is super cute and has minimalistic decor.

Our second night we went to Moma, a Bulgarian restaurant. I cannot remember what I ate there, but I remember it being really good!

We stopped for some baklava for dessert, a traditional Balkan desert.

I went to Plovdiv, Bulgaria on day three, and stopped at a restaurant named Pavaj. There I had fried dough with blueberry jam and feta cheese. We also had a charcuterie plate.

Our last night we went to Made In Blue. I had a meatball dish with a fried egg and tomato sauce. It was incredible.

In conclusion, the food I had in Bulgaria was some of the best I've had in the world.

  1. The food is so fresh (you can taste a difference in the veggie freshness)

  2. The food is very light and has a ton of vegetarian and vegan options

  3. It was very inexpensive (most meals are around or under $10)
